“Junjiaw Gotama cniaw hiangxiong jiaxee sidbut! Junjiaw si brahmin.”

Jiac m si guaw tangx jyr :ee.
Brahmin
Jex m si u qenwsig :ee sik'iong ee hxuad.
Jiongww vut cniur jimgensix,
Decc hiyxding jitt xee qewdat.
Brahmin uaw hxuad diamr lehh,
Si sing’uac ee dy.
Huanlyy itjin qniajuer cingjing,
Singjiu uanjuann ee dua singwjiaw,

8. Aggika
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rajagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary. 

Now on that occasion milk-rice with ghee had been set out for the brahmin Aggika Bharadvaja, who had thought: “I will offer a fire sacrifice, I will perform the fire oblation.”

Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, entered Rajagaha for alms. Walking for alms on uninterrupted alms round in Rajagaha, the Blessed One approached the residence of the brahmin Aggika Bharadvaja and stood to one side. The brahmin Aggika Bharadvaja saw the Blessed One standing for alms and addressed him in verse:
“One endowed with the triple knowledge,
Of proper birth, of ample learning,
Accomplished in knowledge and conduct,
Might partake of this milk-rice meal.”

“Even though one mutters many chants,
One does not become a brahmin by birth
If one is rotten within and defiled,
With followers gained by fraudulent means. 
One who has known his past abodes,
Who sees heaven and the plane of woe,
Who has reached the destruction of birth,
A sage consummate in direct knowledge:
 By means of these three kinds of knowledge
One is a triple-knowledge brahmin. 
This one accomplished in knowledge and conduct
Might partake of this milk-rice meal.”

“Let Master Gotama eat. The worthy is a brahmin.”

“It is not fitting for me to eat food
Over which verses have been sung.
This, brahmin, is not the principle
Observed by those who clearly see.
The Enlightened Ones reject such food
Over which verses have been sung.
As such a principle exists, O brahmin,
This is their rule of conduct.
Serve with other food and drink
The consummate one, the great seer,
The one whose taints have been destroyed,
In whom all worry has subsided.
For he is the proper field
For one intent on merit.”

When this was said, the brahmin Aggika Bhåradvåja said to the Blessed One: “Magnificent, Master Gotama!”

… And the Venerable Aggika Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

〔八〕拜火
爾時,世尊住王舍城竹林栗鼠養餌所。
時,其拜火婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,行火供,煮酪米飯,為拜火供犧。
時,世尊清晨,著衣持鉢,入王舍城乞食。於王舍城家家乞食,至拜火婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門家。至而立於一面。
拜火婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,見世尊乞食,以偈白世尊曰:
三明等具足   生高有多聞
明行具足者   受食我乳飯
〔世尊:〕
雖多唱馱咒   埃滿內不淨
外蔽於欺瞞   非生婆羅門
以知於宿命   見天界惡趣
及達生之滅   聖者力成滿
有此三明人   三明婆羅門
明行具足者   我受食乳飯
「尊者瞿曇且受此食!尊者是婆羅門。」
〔世尊:〕
我唱此偈者   非為得食者
婆羅門於此   知見者非法
諸佛之唱偈   以斥其代價
婆羅門法住   是為生活道
漏盡悔行靜   完全大聖者
依事奉飲食   是為功德田
如是言已,拜火婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此白世尊曰:「世尊!是最勝者……乃至……」
又,此婆羅墮婆闍,成為一阿羅漢。

Diwsig qapp hing'uii longxx singjiu :ee,
Dandanx jitt hy jiacc si cingjing,
Ixgua :ee longxx byy cingjing.”

7. Suddhika
Setting at Savatthi. 

Then the brahmin Suddhika Bharadvaja approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him. When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side and recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“In the world no brahmin is ever purified
Though he be virtuous and austere in practice;
One accomplished in knowledge and conduct is purified,
Not the others, the common folk.”

“Even though one mutters many chants,
One does not become a brahmin by birth
If one is rotten within and defiled,
Supporting oneself by fraudulent means.
Whether one be a khattiya or brahmin,
A vessa, sudda, or outcast, 
If one be resolute, energetic,
Always firm in exertion,
One attains the supreme purity:
Know, O brahmin, that this is so.”

When this was said, the brahmin Suddhika Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: “Mag
nificent, Master Gotama!”

… And the Venerable Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

雖持戒苦行   世間之如何
婆羅門不清   明行具足者
唯此是清淨   其外無淨者

精勤而不撓   常勇猛精進

“Lairgua ee sokvak,
Langlangg virr sokvak behik.
Cingxmng Gotama,
Si'angw tangx qra sokvak tauw .kuix?”

[Sewjunx:]
“U diwhui ee langg siuw qaiwlut,
Laii siulen simx qapp diwhui.
Zedsimx qapp qinxsin :ee,
Ingqaix tangx tuatlii sokvak.
Tuatlii tamiokg,
Simrjiww uanwceh qapp bubingg,
Huanlyw jin bet ee arahant,
Tangx qaixtuad soxu ee sokvak.
Miaa ixqip siktew,
Jiongwgai qapp siktew ee sniurliam,
Ixx siaubet byy cunx,
Dirr jiax sokvak virr cetdng.”

Jiaxee ue qongw liauw, jitt xee vagqer ee Bharadvaja ee brahmin iong jiaxee ue qra Sewjunx qongw, “Gotama si jueww derr id uixdai…”

6. Tangle
Setting at Savatthi. 

Then the brahmin Jata Bharadvaja, Bharadvaja of the Tangle, approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him. When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side and addressed the Blessed One in verse:
“A tangle inside, a tangle outside,
This generation is entangled in a tangle.
I ask you this, O Gotama,
Who can disentangle this tangle?” 

“A man established on virtue, wise,
Developing the mind and wisdom,
A bhikkhu ardent and discerning:
He can disentangle this tangle.
Those for whom lust and hatred
Along with ignorance have been expunged,
The arahants with taints destroyed:
For them the tangle is disentangled.
Where name-and-form cease,
End without remainder,
And also impingement and perception of form:
It is here this tangle is cut.”

When this was said, the brahmin Jatå Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: “Magnificent, Master Gotama!…” 

And the Venerable Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

舍衛城因緣。
時,縈髻婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,來詣世尊處。詣而與世尊互相致問,坐於一面。
坐一面之縈髻婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以偈白世尊曰:
內外之纏縺   人人迷此纏
奉問於瞿曇   誰利此纏縺
〔世尊:〕
智慧人住戒   以修心智慧
熱心深慎者   彼應離纏縺
以離於貪著   乃至瞋無明
漏盡阿羅漢   解脫於纏縺
名之以及色   障礙及色想
無餘盡消滅   此悉斷纏縺
如是言已,縈髻婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此白世尊曰:「世尊!是最勝者。……乃至……」
又其婆羅墮婆闍,成為一阿羅漢。

Gotama, guaw si Be Qa'ngg Sionghai :ee.”

“Langg narr kyxviw ix ee miaa,
Liw kaksit si be qa'ngg sionghai :ee.
Mrqycc be qa'ngg sionghai,
Diyhh dirr srinx, kauw, qapp simx,
Longxx be kir sionghai tazinn :ee,
Jiacc jniasit si be qa'ngg sionghai :ee.”

When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side and said to the Blessed One: “I am Ahimsaka the Harmless, Master Gotama. I am Ahimsaka the Harmless, Master Gotama.”

“If one were as one’s name implies
You would be a harmless one.
But it is one who does no harm at all
By body, speech, or mind,
Who really is a harmless one
As he does not harm others.”

When this was said, the brahmin Ahimsaka Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: “Magnificent, Master Gotama!…” 

And the Venerable Ahimsaka Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

〔五〕不害
舍衛城因緣。
時,不害婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,來詣世尊處。詣而與世尊互相致問,坐於一面。
坐一面之不害婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此白世尊曰:「瞿曇!我是不害。瞿曇!我是不害。」

若如其名者   汝實為不害
然而不害於   身口以及心
以不害他者   始名實不害
如是言已,不害婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此白世尊曰:「瞿曇!是最勝者……乃至……
又此婆羅墮婆闍,成為一阿羅漢。

4. Bilangika

The brahmin Bilangika Bharadvaja heard: “It is said that the brahmin of the Bharadvaja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the recluse Gotama.” Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and silently stood to one side. 

Then the Blessed One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the brahmin Bilangika Bharadvaja’s mind, addressed him in verse:
“If one wrongs an innocent man, 
A pure person without blemish,
The evil falls back on the fool himself
Like fine dust thrown against the wind.”

When this was said, the brahmin Bilangika Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: “Magnificent, Master Gotama!…” And the Venerable Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

〔四〕毘蘭耆迦
爾時,世尊住舍衛城竹林栗鼠養餌所。
毘蘭耆迦婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,聞婆羅墮婆闍姓之婆羅門,於沙門瞿曇座前,由家〔出〕無家而出家。
忿怒不喜,來詣世尊處。詣已,默然而立一面。
時,世尊知毘蘭耆迦婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門心之所念,以偈告毘蘭耆迦婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門曰:
清淨無穢惡   以污無垢人
惡還其愚人   逆風撒細塵
如是言已,毘蘭耆迦婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此白世尊曰:「世尊!是最勝者。世尊!是最勝者。我今歸依世尊瞿曇、法、僧伽。願於世尊處得出家及具足戒。」……乃至……「知生已盡,梵行已立,所作已辦,不受後有。」
又此婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,成為一阿羅漢。

Ue qongw liauw, Sewjunx diam diam. Hitt sii, Bharadvaja ee brahmin Asurindaka Ongg iong jiaxee ue qra Sewjunx qongw, “Sabunn, liw virr pacpai! Sabunn, liw virr pacvai!”

[Sewjunx:]
“Kauw cud vorog ee ue,
Gong langg liahjunw did singwli,
Sidjai singwli :ee,
Si jaix zimxnai :ee.
Iong hunwno hingg hro kiw hunwno :ee,
Surjingg qyckacc og.
Byy iong hunwno hingg hro kiw hunwno:ee,
Nng vingg longxx singwli.
Jaix duiwhongx soxx hunwno :ee,
Vingjing qaqi vyxcii jniar liam,
Qaqi qapp tazinn liongxhongx,
Longxx u lirig.
Ix si qaqi qapp tazinn,
Sianghongx ee isux,
Dirr hxuad budix :ee,
Liahjunw ix si gong langg.”

Jiaxee ue qongw liauw, Bharadvaja ee brahmin Asurindaka Ongg anxnex qra Sewjunx qongw, “Sewjunx si jueww derr id uixdai! Gotama si jueww derr id uixdai! …”

Dyrr anxnex, jitt xui Bharadvaja ee brahmin junjiaw jniaa juer jit xee arahant.

3. Asurindaka
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rajagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary. 

The brahmin Asurindaka Bharadvaja heard: “It is said that the brahmin of the Bharadvaja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the recluse Gotama.” Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and abused and reviled him with rude, harsh words. 

When he had finished speaking, the Blessed One remained silent. Then the brahmin Asurindaka Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: “You’re beaten, recluse! You’re beaten, recluse!”

“The fool thinks victory in speech is won
When he speaks vindictive words,
But the true victory is for one who knows
(The excellence of) patient endurance.
One who repays an angry man with anger
… (as in above) …
Are those unskilled in the Dhamma.”

When this was said, the brahmin Asurindaka Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: “Magnificent, Master Gotama!…” 

And the Venerable Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

〔三〕阿修羅王
爾時,世尊住王舍城竹林栗鼠養餌所。
阿修羅王婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,聞婆羅墮婆闍姓之婆羅門,於沙門瞿曇之處,由家〔出〕無家而出家。忿怒不喜,來詣世尊處。詣已,以激烈不善之語,讒謗、誹謗世尊。
如是言已,世尊默然。
時,阿修羅王婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此白世尊曰:「沙門!汝勝利!沙門!汝勝利。」
〔世尊:〕
口出粗惡語     愚者以為勝
然實勝利者     乃知堪忍人
以忿還忿者     更為是惡事
不以忿還忿     戰得二勝利
知他之所忿     靜己正念人
自及他兩方     皆行於利益
彼乃自及他     兩方之醫師
於法無知者     以此為愚人
如是言已,阿修羅王婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,以此言世尊曰:「世尊!是最勝者,世尊!是最勝者……乃至……」
又,此尊者婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,成為一阿羅漢。

“U ar, Gotama! Sisiongg u ving’iuw, cinjniaa, qajok iacc langkeh laii vaiwhongw guaw.”
Brahmin, liw anwjnuaw sniu lehh? Liw u hro inx vngrdngr, diamxsimx iacc hyw jiahmic bor?”
“U ar, Gotama! Guaw sisiongg hro inx vngrdngr, diamxsimx iacc hyw jiahmic.”
Brahmim! Narr inx hiaxee byy jiapsiu, hiaxee e venwsingg si’angw ee mic lehh?”
“Gotama! Narr inx m jiapsiu, hiaxee sidbut dongzenn sriok guaw.”

Gotama kyxviw hro dyw .lyc .ee vreh kiw, virr kamr :ee henxhen, jixsi dyrlo hro bebangg :ee, kyxviw u bagjiux :ee tangx qnir diyc mihqnia ee hxingg, kyxviw oamr diongx qongbingg ee dinghuew. Cincniu jitt kuanw, Gotama qongw jiongxjiongw hxuad. Guaw beh quiix Sewjunx Gotama, Hxuad, qapp jingdoo. Guaw tangx dirr Sewjunx Gotama jitt xui cutqex siurqair bor?”

Jiuwme ee Bharadvaja ee brahmin tangx dirr Sewjunx Gotama jitt xui cutqex siurqair. Iurqycc, jiuwme ee Bharadvaja ee brahmin junjiaw siurqair liauw byy zuarr quw, ix dandok unxqux, byy hongwdong, kensingg, qutlat jingjinr diamr lehh. Ix jniawjniar si liongqax ji’ jxuw, uirr singjiu dingxsiong cingjing ee hing’uii, an’ u cur venr byy cur laii cutqex, dirr henrjingg ee hxaud did diyc jurdix jurjingr. “Jaix snesiw lunhuee ixx bedjin, cingjing ee hing'uii ixx qenwlip, soxx qaix juer :ee ixx juer, jit'aursinx be qycc siursingx laii junjai.”

2. Abuse
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rajagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary. 

The brahmin Akkosaka Bharadvaja, Bharadvaja the Abusive, heard:
“It is said that the brahmin of the Bharadvaja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the recluse Gotama.” Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and abused and reviled him with rude, harsh words.

When he had finished speaking, the Blessed One said to him: “What do you think, brahmin? Do your friends and colleagues, kinsmen and relatives, as well as guests come to visit you?”
“Sometimes they come to visit, Master Gotama.”
“Do you then offer them some food or a meal or a snack?”
“Sometimes I do, Master Gotama.”
“But if they do not accept it from you, then to whom does the food belong?”
“If they do not accept it from me, then the food still belongs to us.”
“So too, brahmin, we—who do not abuse anyone, who do not scold anyone, who do not rail against anyone—refuse to accept from you the abuse and scolding and tirade you let loose at us. It still belongs to you, brahmin! It still belongs to you, brahmin!
“Brahmin, one who abuses his own abuser, who scolds the one who scolds him, who rails against the one who rails at him—he is said to partake of the meal, to enter upon an exchange. But we do not partake of your meal; we do not enter upon an exchange. It still belongs to you, brahmin! It still belongs to you, brahmin!”

“The king and his retinue understand the recluse Gotama to be an arahant, yet Master Gotama still gets angry.”

“How can anger arise in one who is angerless,
In the tamed one of righteous living,
In one released by perfect knowledge,
In the Stable One who abides in peace?
One who repays an angry man with anger
Thereby makes things worse for himself.
Not repaying an angry man with anger,
One wins a battle hard to win.
He practices for the welfare of both—
His own and the other’s—
When, knowing that his foe is angry,
He mindfully maintains his peace.
When he achieves the cure of both—
His own and the other’s—
The people who consider him a fool
Are those unskilled in the Dhamma.”

When this was said, the brahmin Akkosaka Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, Master Gotama!… I go for refuge to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Bhikkhu Sangha. May I receive the going forth under Master Gotama, may I receive the higher ordination?”

Then the brahmin of the Bharadvaja clan received the going forth under the Blessed
One, he received the higher ordination. And soon, not long after his higher ordination, dwelling alone … the Venerable Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

〔二〕讒謗
爾時,世尊住舍衛城竹林栗鼠養餌所。
讒謗婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,聞婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門於沙門瞿曇之處,由家〔出〕無家而出家。
忿怒不喜,來詣世尊處。詣已,以激烈惡語讒謗、非難世尊。
作如是言已,世尊於此告讒謗婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門曰:「婆羅門!汝如何思惟耶?有朋友親戚骨肉者、客等來造訪汝否?」
「唯然,瞿曇!時常有朋友親戚骨肉者、客等來造訪我。」
「婆羅門!汝如何思惟耶?汝予與彼等堅食、軟食及美食否?」
「唯然,瞿曇!我時常與彼等堅食、軟食及美食。」
「婆羅門!若彼等不受者,則將成為誰之物耶?」
「瞿曇!若彼等不受者,彼等食物當屬我者。」
「婆羅門!如是汝讒謗不應讒謗我,誹謗不應誹謗我,非難不應非難我。我不受汝之此等。婆羅門!彼則是汝之物。讒謗返還其讒謗者,誹謗返還其誹謗者,非難返還其非難者。婆羅門!此謂〔主客〕共食、共來往。我不與汝共食、共來往。婆羅門!此是汝物。婆羅門!此是汝物。」
「王與王臣今如是知尊者瞿曇:『沙門瞿曇是應供者,然瞿曇亦將怒。』」
〔世尊:〕
無忿自調御   是為正生活
有正智解脫   寂靜如是人
忿由何處起   以忿還忿者
更為是惡事   不以忿還忿
戰得二勝利   知他之所忿
靜己正念人   自及他兩方
皆行於利益   彼乃自與他
兩方之醫師   於法無知者
以此為愚人
如是言已,讒謗婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門如是白世尊曰:「世尊!是最勝。……乃至……我今歸依世尊瞿曇、法、僧伽。願於世尊瞿曇座下出家得具足戒。」
讒謗婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,得於世尊之處出家及具足戒。
又,尊者讒謗婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門得具足戒不久,單獨隱棲,不放逸、虔誠、精勤而住。彼正是良家之子,為成就梵行,由家〔出〕無家而出家,於現法得入自知、自證。「知生已盡,梵行已立,所作已辦,不受後有。」
又,此婆羅墮婆闍婆羅門,為一阿羅漢。
